Pyxes for Carrying Holy Communion

Pyxes, also known as Communion host containers or viaticum pyxes, are small sacred vessels used to preserve and transport consecrated hosts safely, reverently and with the dignity required by the Holy Eucharist.

They are commonly used by priests, deacons and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion when bringing the Eucharist to the sick, elderly, hospital patients or other faithful who are unable to attend Holy Mass in person.

Sacred Vessels for Viaticum and Communion to the Sick

The word viaticum refers to Holy Communion given to a person who is seriously ill or approaching the end of earthly life. The term comes from the Latin word viaticum, meaning provision for a journey, expressing Christ’s presence as spiritual nourishment for the final passage towards eternal life.

Pyxes are also regularly used to bring Holy Communion to those who are ill or homebound, even when there is no immediate danger of death. Their purpose is to protect the consecrated hosts and ensure that they are carried with the reverence due to the Blessed Sacrament.

Gold and Silver Pyxes

At Karelia Arte Sacra, you will find pyxes made mainly from gold-plated brass, nickel-plated brass and other metals with gold or silver finishes. These materials provide durability, resistance and an appearance appropriate to the sacred purpose of the vessel.

The lids are often decorated with Christian and Eucharistic symbols, including:

  • The IHS Christogram, a traditional representation of the name of Jesus.
  • The cross, the central symbol of the Christian faith and of Redemption.
  • The chalice and host, directly connected with the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
  • Eucharistic motifs, such as wheat, grape clusters and rays of light.

Different Sizes and Capacities

Our collection includes pyxes in different diameters, thicknesses and capacities, suitable both for carrying a small number of hosts and for bringing Communion to several people during a pastoral visit.

Before choosing a pyx, it is advisable to check the diameter of the hosts that will be used and the approximate capacity required. The type of closure should also be considered, as the vessel must remain securely closed during transport.

How to Care for a Pyx

To protect the gold or silver finish and preserve the vessel in good condition, it should be cleaned only by hand with a soft cloth and, when necessary, a small amount of mild detergent.

  • Do not use abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals or aggressive cleaning products.
  • Do not place the pyx in a dishwasher.
  • Dry it carefully after cleaning.
  • Store it in a clean, dry and protected place.
  • Avoid impacts, falls or pressure that may deform the vessel.
  • Regularly inspect the closure, hinge and overall condition of the pyx.
